AISP February 2010 Calendar of Events
February 5-6: Ojibwe Language and Culture Weekend
More details on this year's event is forthcoming.
Last year's language and culture weekend:
AISP is again holding the Language Pow Wow and Language Quiz Bowl hosted this year at the Spartan Village Community Center, located in one of our on-campus apartment communities.
February 6 7-9pm Ojibwe Language Quiz Bowl
- 6 teams of MSU students learning the Ojibwe Language will compete against one another to show their skills with basic Ojibwe. More advanced students act as quizzers, and all questions are translated and viewable on a screen out of sight from the students, so you can follow along and learn some Ojibwe yourself! During breaks in the program, there will be opportunities for audience members to win prizes, so pay attention to what the students are saying!
February 7 1-5pm Ojibwe Language Pow Wow
- Live the language at the Pow Wow! Come watch traditional Anishinabeg dances and participate in some inter-tribal dances too. The entire event is em ceed by Helen Roy, our Anishinabemowin (Ojibwe Language) teacher, in the language of the Three Fires people. A screen showing a powerpoint translation of what she is saying will be visible the whole time. This is a great chance to immerse yourself in the language, watch some fantastic dancing, and have a great time! Special events will include a Hoop Dance, some Hand Drumming and a Give Away.
Both events are being held in the multipurpose room of the Spartan Viillage Community Center, located at 1460 Middlevale Road, East Lansing, MI
Both events are FREE and everyone is welcome; families are encouraged to come enjoy this cultural experience together!
